*Two qualifications must imposed on this list:

First, these individuals do not all qualify by the same definitions.  This is especially true in the case of the geniuses, some of whom are listed because of their high IQ, phenomenal precocity, or other idiosyncratic distinction. In fact, some of those listed might be called “pseudo-geniuses” (e.g., Deep Blue, Devi, McGonagall, Sidis, van Meegeren, and vos Savant).  But they all either illustrate or challenge our conceptions of genius, creativity, and leadership.

Second, the list by no means constitutes a systematic or represenative selection.  Many notable figures still lack significant coverage on the internet. To a very large extent, coverage is contingent on the eccentric interests of those who like to construct websites for their personal heroes.  Especially conspicuous is the dearth of good sites for luminaries from non-Western civilizations.  Presumably this unfortunate state of affairs will diminish as internet expertise continues to diffuse throughout the world.

Meanwhile, I welcome any suggestions regarding sites that should be added to the above list.  I’m especially interested in any one who has achieved eminence in an area not yet represented.

MOVIES

One way that our culture reveals its fascination with genius, creativity, and leadership is to produce biopics, documentaries, or other film genre devoted to some notable figure.  Below is a sampling of what has appeared on the silver screen.  Included are films that deal with exceptional talents of diverse forms just to present the range of the phenomenon that attracts so much popular interest.  I’ve even included some films about infamous criminals given the oft-hypothesized connection between genius and the criminal mind.

Notice that, on average, well over one such movie appears per year, and by the end of the 20th century filmmakers were producing much more than four of these films per year!  Biopics and their kind really took off after the advent of sound pictures – people wanted to hear their heros speak.  Of course, not all are masterpieces, and some are pure Hollywood fluff.  Check out some of the sites to find out which greats inspire the greatest flicks.
